Large Animal Ultrasound Service

Hospital for Large Animals at Cummings Veterinary Medical Center at Tufts offers the region's most advanced large animal diagnostic and interventional Ultrasound Service, led by Dr. Kate Chope and Dr. Wade Tenney.

In addition to traditional ultrasound procedures, ultrasound-only appointments are also available, which allow the Hospital for Large Animals team to work directly with a client's veterinarian as a team of health care providers for patients. This would apply to a case that has already been worked up and requires an ultrasound of a specific area of interest. In these cases, the correspondence regarding history and desired ultrasound will take place directly between the client and their primary veterinarian and the ultrasound clinician or veterinary assistant. The patient is admitted to the ultrasound service for an out-patient appointment. Following the exam, the results will be relayed directly to the client and their primary veterinarian to decide on the best course of action for the patient.

High-quality diagnostic ultrasound is an excellent imaging method for diagnosing soft-tissue injuries, abnormalities and certain bony disorders. Ultrasound can be used to diagnose, treat and follow equine musculoskeletal injuries. Ultrasound not only examines the distal limb, it can also be used to help veterinarians evaluate the cardiovascular, respiratory and gastrointestinal systems. It provides important follow-up information during the healing process and is an integral part of proper rehabilitation programs for soft-tissue injuries. Additionally, interventional ultrasound can be used to guide therapeutic injections, diagnostic fluid sampling, and biopsies.

The Cummings Veterinary Medical Center's superior equipment and faculty expertise ensure high-quality images every time. The hospital has a state-of-the-art ultrasound machine, the Toshiba Aplio 300, dedicated for large animal use. The transducers include a linear 18 to 13 MHz, linear 11 to 9 MHz, mircoconvex, curvilinear and cardiac probe. A portable ultrasound machine is also available for muscular, skeletal, abdominal, and cardiac ultrasound. All images are digitally recorded and can be easily copied onto CDs or emailed to both clients and referring veterinarians.
